Short Story in Spanish and English

My overall aim is to improve my knowledge of verb tenses so that I can use them more easily when speaking and to learn a few idioms so that I sound more like a native speaker.

Goal for week 1. Write and recite a short story in Spanish using the present perfect and imperfect tenses.

Here we go then. I wrote this little story in Spanish with the help of another of my Italki Spanish teachers, Mauro. There’s an English translation and audio will be done as soon as I get some software!

Short Story in Spanish and English Goal for Week 1

La sorpressa para las bailarinas (The surprise for the dancers)

(One day, three dancers, Anna, Eva and Mary, were going to the theatre when their car broke down at the side of the road. They were very worried because they had to be at the theatre in one hour to appear/take part in a theatre production).

No sabían qué hacer.

(The car stopped in a country road, in the middle of nowhere and there was nobody around. They didn’t know what to do).

(Only Anna had a mobile phone with her but she had been talking on her mobile for a long time, trying to find directions to get to the theatre and unfortunately now the battery was dead).

(Luckily they found a tool box in the glove box of the car. There was all kinds of tools including a spanner and several screwdrivers. However, they were dressed in their dancing costumes, their tutus, and they were very worried that their clothes would become dirty).

Anna y Eva, levantaron el capó y miraron dentro, mientras María vigilaba (keep an eye out) por si acaso alguien llegaba.

(After twenty minutes they decided that they had to try and repair the car themselves. Anna and Eva lifted the hood and looked inside, while May kept an eye out just in case someone came).

(After a few minutes, Mary saw a cyclist, a young man, coming towards them and she raised her arm to stop him. His name was John, he wasn’t a mechanic but knew a little about cars and knew right away what the problem was. They had run out of petrol).

(John ran to the nearest village where there was a service station and filled a container full of gasolina. Then he returned to the car where the dancers were waiting anxiously. He filled the tank of the car).

(The three dancers were very grateful for their help and gave him two tickets to their show to thank him).
